Salvage Job: Homestead Preserve Stables

The Black Dog Crew recently headed to Hot Springs, VA to salvage the Homestead Preserve stables, located on the former property of The Homestead Resort.

The original stables (above) were lost in a fire and replaced with 'the old stables' (below) in the early 1900s.  These stables were critical to the hotel operations when transportation depended on horses.  The building stored carriages and horses that were used to transport guests and was known as 'The Livery" for equestrian and then motor service during the era of train transportation.  The hotel also provided equestrian activities such as fox hunting, trail riding, dressage and jumping.  

A modern equestrian facility was built in the late 1980's on the hotel grounds and 'the old stables' served as storage and fell into disrepair.   The Homestead sold the property to Celebration Associates in 2003 as part of a 13,000 acre land sale, of that, 9,000 acres were transferred to The Nature Conservancy to establish the Warm Springs Mountain Preserve, 800 acres were put into a conservation easement with the Virginia Outdoor Foundation and 2,500 acres were set aside for the Homestead Preserve.

In 2012 Bath County declared it a 'nuisance structure' because it was unsafe to occupy.  It was decided to demolish the structure to make way for future development on the site. 

Not sure they could have picked a colder few days for the job but it sounds like it didn't take long to warm up!

The carriage elevator was still in tact and the crew was able to bring it back to the shop!

 

This beautiful bead board (some pieces are double sided) was salvaged from the tack room walls - available for $1.50 per linear foot. 

Many stall doors made it back to the shop with lots of potential! $375 each

The crew was able to salvage these massive trusses.

Two are solid and two have been repaired (shown above).

They made it look easy bringing them back to the shop!

We're selling the 4 reclaimed trusses as a set for $12,000.

Salvage Job: former 1st Baptist Church - Bluefield, WV

The Black Dog Crew just returned from a quick salvage trip to save some stunning architectural features from the former 1st Baptist Church in Bluefield, WV - circa 1907.  The building is now home to The Spoken Word Temple, which is currently renovating the space.

The original balcony came down in three pieces and would make an incredible bar front!

We typically turn down organs and pianos, due to space, so I'm not sure what Mike and Robert had in mind when they brought this c.1917 pipe organ back to the shop!  Can't wait to see what happens with this beautiful piece!

Antique M. P. Moller Pipe Organ - circa 1917 salvaged from the former 1st Baptist Church in Bluefield, WV

The crew returned from salvaging the former 1st Baptist Church in Bluefield, WV with this.... a 1917 pipe organ!

Made by the M. P. Moller Company in Greencastle, PA.

For those who have updated to digital organs, the pipes would make a beautiful facade.  There are 32 total - the tallest is 109" and the shortest is 59 5/8".

We talked to Josh at Whitesel Organs in Harrisonburg, VA - he estimated that a full restoration would likely cost between $70,000-80,000 - still a bargin compared to the cost of a new pipe organ.

The wood pipes are stunning just by themselves!

Salvage Job: Smith Mountain Lake / Radford, VA / Delivery to NYC

Leave it to living in a small town when 'the bee guy' that comes to save the day during a salvage job turns out to be one of your good customers!  We were thrilled to have Jeff Jenner - co-owner of Turkey Ridge Farms in Boones Mill, VA - help re-home a swarm of honeybees during a recent salvage job at Smith Mountain Lake. The cabin was located on property owned by Crystal Shores Marina, which is slated for development.

The crew was able to salvage beautiful old growth wood from the cabin that will be used for many projects, including this bed designed by Mike and Gracie.

Robert and Tay made a quick trip down to Radford to salvage a number of antique light fixtures (listed in our Ebay Store) and this unusual bathtub. 

We don't typically take in built-in tubs but this is unusual in that it is  three sided and just look at those curves!

Big Balls also arrived at the shop!

We appreciated having the opportunity to see how the fire doors, salvaged from Washington Mills in Mayodan, NC, will live on!

Mike and Ted delivered the doors to a former cotton factory that has been converted to lofts - can't think of a better fit!  Here's a behind the scenes look at the glamorous side of filming Salvage Dawgs :)  Many thanks to homeowner Frank and son Jack for being such good sports!

Salvage Job: Norfolk, VA - Ghent Row - The Painted Lady Restaurant & Tea Room

The Black Dog Crew recently headed to Norfolk, VA to salvage a block of homes, known as Ghent Row, prior to demolition.  Two of the houses were home to The Painted Lady Restaurant & Tea Room (pictured below), a well loved local landmark.  

We are very thankful to the Hoover family for making a special effort to see that the architectural details from these properties were saved from the landfill prior to demolition.  They were owner operators of The Painted Lady and admired her as much as her patrons but unfortunately the buildings were no longer sustainable.  The neighborhood is currently going through a transition and in her place will be a new 164-unit apartment complex called The Green at Ghent, which will be one of the most environmentally advanced apartment buildings in Norfolk, with two "green walls" for energy efficiency.  

Robert reached out to his old college friend (Go Hokies!) and fraternity brother Scott Crumley, owner of Crumley Group, Inc., to help with this salvage job.  Robert worked for Scott, prior to moving to Roanoke to start his own general contracting business, Blue Ridge Residential.  Thanks to Scott's mom, here's a look back at the early years, circa December 1994!

Crumley Group has been building award-winning homes in the Hampton Roads area since 1985 and Robert knew they would provide invaluable support.  When the project was proposed, Scott was the first in line to volunteer his time and resources to join the "fun"!

Next to the three homes was a fish shack, which boasted a salvaged iconic '7-Eleven Cupola'.  Thanks to Scott, we were able to bring it back to the shop in one piece!

Speaking of 7-Eleven's.... Roanoke just happens to have two of the best around!  If you're in town, stop by and say 'hi' to owners Susan and Rob Lipes - their Grandin Village and South Roanoke stores are known as 'The Happiest Place to Be!' and even have their own facebook group!

The Painted Lady's Bar proved to be a challenge to remove but was safely brought back in time to be sold to the set of the TV series Banshee  - look out for it on Cinemax!

While the crew was gone,  Lonny was busy in the wood shop fabricating this custom sink - made from a US Navy Reserve Footlocker (fun fact: Mike and Robert both served in the Navy).

If you know Mike, it's no surprise that he returned from Norfolk with a boat!  This came from The Bill Hoover Boat Collection and was the one of the first fiberglass Chris Crafts made.  No doubt there are grand plans for "Cheek to Cheek".... stay tuned!
