Vintage Bus Roll Wall Hanging

We just hung this awesome vintage bus roll in our Marketplace! This would be perfect in a loft or anywhere with at least 11 foot ceilings (although, you can always crop if needed).

Mike and Robert found this picking through a local scrap yard - featured in Episode 3 of Salvage Dawgs (airing on the DIY Network April 13th at 8:30am and April 14th at 6:30pm).

Millstones

We just received these 4 sets of millstones from Ben Hassett, owner of B. E. Hassett Millwrights.

Each set could be put back into operation will a little refurbishment. They could also be used for educational displays in a museum environment, because they are very unique and rare. Both sets are clockwise rotation and monolithic stones.

Price per set $4,000.

2 sets (a & b) are 42" French buhr stones that were salvaged from Sandidges Mill in Amherst County. French buhrs were quarried in the Marine River Valley in France and shipped over as ballast on ships. The millstones were then assembled in yards up and down the east coast. These stones are in very good shape and could be put back into operation for grinding grain.

2 sets (c & d) are 48" from a Mill outside of Rural Retreat, VA. Both sets of stones are dressed for clockwise rotation. One stone is granite and possibly came from the Blacksburg, VA or Rocky Mount, NC area. The other stone may be what is known as a Racoon Buhr stone. We believe it was quarried in Ohio. It is a very porous aggressive looking gray stone, with aggregate inclusions. * note: Ben has never seen another set of stones like these.

RR&E Car 56 at Memorial and 13th St - Magic City Launders & Cleaners circa 1948

One of the nicest things to come out of having a TV show is hearing from folks all across the country. We were thrilled to receive this email from a native Roanoker who recently discovered us on HGTV - (be sure to tune in Thursday, January10th at 8pm for Episode 2 and 3!)

I grew up in Roanoke and remember when your building at Memorial and 13th Street was Magic City Cleaners and Storage. I would pass by regularly when heading downtown on the streetcar. In 2006 I wrote a book about the Roanoke streetcars for the historical society and in the process of obtaining photos I received the attached photo from Gordon Hamilton of Roanoke who shot the picture shortly before service ended in 1948. I did not use this photo in the book but did use a number of Gordon's photographs including the one on the cover. I think you will find the photo of interest.

I wrote Gordon, who still lives in Roanoke, and he graciously agreed for us to use his photo. He also provided this background information:

Incidentally, this car had just left the Raleigh Court end-of-line located just south of the intersection of Grandin Road and Brandon Ave., and was headed for Patterson Ave., Campbell Ave., Jefferson St., and then a large loop through South Roanoke on 26th St., Rosalind Ave., 27th St., Wycliffe Ave. 26th St. (again), Avenham Ave., Broadway Ave., 22th St. and then back to Jefferson St. to retrace its route to back to Raleigh Court.

Our building has held a number of businesses since its days as a cleaners but you can still see remnants of the fur vault upstairs - be sure to look out for the the cork lined walls.

If anyone has other photos of the building when it was Magic City Launders and Cleaners, we'd love to see them!

What in the world was this sink used for? Update: The "Standard" Straddle Stand

Update: sometimes ignorance is bliss...

Many thanks to Walter K. Parker II, The Old School Plumber, for sending these photos - taken from a 1936 "Standard" catalog.

It turns out these 'Straddle Stands' (patent date 1919) were designed by the Army for use during the World War to treat and prevent sexual diseases. This sink would have originally had a stand with a foot petal to operate and control the temperature of the water.

The Standard Sanitary Mfg. Co. was the only company to manufacture this sink and restricted the sale primarily to the U.S. Army and Navy, Government, State and City Health Departments, Hospitals and Physicians in good standing.
