"Luxury Doghouses and the Dogs That Couldn't Care Less" NYT

Click HERE for a fun article in the New York Times featuring luxury dog houses including some from the Roanoke Valley SPCA's BARKitecture event, where Black Dog Salvage won first place! * we're not pictured in the article, so I thought I'd re-post these photos :)

Slate roof, salvaged balusters, cast iron fireplace surround, reclaimed window, architectural corbels, vintage street signs, antique salt glazed star bricks and a working night light!
This custom doghouse was auctioned off with proceeds benefiting our local SPCA and went to a great home!
Whether or not it's actually being used is another story... but it is definitely a great conversation piece!

Salvage Job: Hopemont Hospital, Terra Alta, WV

Hopemont Hospital, Terra Alta, WV

The guys just got back from WV with some great industrial finds including these two sinks:

"Standard" Madenta Dental Lavatory
This adorable dental sink was popular at the turn of the century to avoid brushing your teeth and washing your hands in the same sink.  For more history, here are a couple links:
Vintage Plumbing
Retro Renovation

This was likely a scrub sink

For a brief history of the hospital (below) and photos, click HERE:
Hopemont State Hospital is in Preston County, West Virginia. It is located to the east of Terra Alta, WV. It was originally created as the West Virginia State Tuberculosis Sanitarium. According to the Geographic Names Information System, Hopemont has also been known as Rinards Crossing.

In 1911, the state Legislature funded a 60-bed sanitarium at Hopemont, which opened in 1912 in Terra Alta, WV. Hopemont was the state tuberculosis sanitarium from 1912 until 1965. It was located on farm land at a high altitude because low temperature and the high altitude were thought to help cure the TB patients. The location, called Snowy Creek, was in close proximity to the train, making the facility readily accessible.
Established in 1911 by an act of the Legislature as the State Tuberculosis Sanitarium. In 1921, name was changed to the Hopemont Sanitarium and to the Hopemont State Hospital for the chronically ill, aged, and infirm in 1965.

Richard Rummell Panoramic College Prints - Great Graduation Gifts!

Great gifts for grads - only $45 each!
We have just a few left of these panoramic college prints by artist Richard Rummell.

At the turn of the century, Littig & Company commissioned the accomplished artist Richard Rummell (1848-1924) to create watercolors of some of the nations most prestigious colleges. From these watercolors, copper-plates were engraved and a limited number of pulls (engravings) were distributed.
Unlike other college views of the period, the Rummell plates are glorious panoramic views of the entire campus. Art historians speculate that since the views appear to be drawn from an altitude of about 300 ft., it is likely that the artist worked from a balloon.

Under Restoration: Antique Brunswick-Balke-Collender Billiard Pool Table - SOLD!

*** UPDATE - THIS WAS SOLD 9/18/12
Here's a peek at Robert's latest project...
the restoration of this antique c.1918 Brunswick Billiard Table.

With the help of Dick Patch, owner of Astonish Restoration, this beautiful table has been brought back to life.

Brunswick tables are known around the world as masterpieces of original craftsmanship and design.

Price upon completion is $11,800...that is if Robert can let it go!

Note the Mother of Pearl inlay...

and leather pockets.

Arcadian
Four legs or six legs; manufactured under 22 construction patents awarded from 1900 to 1916. From the 1926 Brunswick-Balke-Collender Co. catalog, page 14:

Wood and Finish: Furnished in handsomely figured mahogany with fancy inlay and hand-rubbed to a dull finish.

Construction: This table is a modification of the jumbo type construction. It is built with heavy 5-ply compound sides upon which is superimposed the top molding which is made 6" x 3 3/8" of tongued, grooved and glued, specially selected and scientifically kiln-dried lumber. The legs are made of double strength, glued and veneered stock of somewhat lighter design than the Hudson and Arcade legs. Rigidity of table is secured by fastening the solidly constructed side into the legs by means of maple dowels and heavy iron bolts. Rigidity further guaranteed by use of cross stretchers which extend from side to side and from end to end of table. Whole table is faced with a very good grade of mahogany veneer. The Arcadian table is beautifully designed and made under the most careful supervision of our technical experts.

The Slate Bed: The slate bed consists of three pieces of the best quality slate, regulation size 1 inch thick, with all joints secured by brass dowels and sockets. It has no screw holes on the playing surface. If desired, 1 1/2" slate can be furnished.

The Cushion Rails: The cushion rails of the Arcadian table are made up with what is known as a 3--ply body, consisting of three layers of woods of alternating grain glued together to insure the rails against climatic changes. The center layer of these plies is hard maple. This is the layer through which the cushion bolts are placed and maple is used because it holds the bolts firmly.

The top of the rails is covered with a rail cap of compound construction faced with solid rosewood. The rails are securely fastened to the table by invisible cushion bolts. These bolts are covered by blind cushion rail facing which is built up of 5--ply compound construction and faced with a high grade mahogany veneer with fancy inlay.

The Cushions: The Arcadian table can be furnished with any style Monarch perfect angle cushion.

The Pocket Irons: The pocket irons are our No. 6 style, which are counter sunk in the ends of the cushion rails by means of brass sockets.

The Playing Equipment: The playing equipment furnished with the Arcadian table is as ordered.
