LIPES PHARMACY sign now resting at Black Dog Salvage

For anyone with ties to South Roanoke, Lipes Pharmacy was an institution and part of the daily fabric of many lives. After 82 years, the independent pharmacy has been sold to CVS and the building now awaits its next chapter.

We feel fortunate to have to salvaged the Lipes sign and are proud to have it resting in our Marketplace. It is one of the few items in our permanent collection and will not be for sale.

*note: the 'Soda Fountain' letters were discovered in the basement - they were taken down from the sign when the fountain was discontinued in 1988. The sign is now back as it originally appeared.

We also salvaged a few other fun finds from Lipes that are available for sale including vintage double sided benches and store fixtures.

The South Roanoke Circle recently compiled memories of Lipes.

Here are a few highlights from Robert (Black Dog co-owner) and his sisters :)

Grilled cheese sandwiches made with mayo and cherry cokes at the grill with girlfriends. A large selection of "LOVE'S BABY SOFT" products and best of all....charging it to Mom!!! (Kemp Kulp Renninger)

Lipes cheeseburger, the best cheeseburger ever, led to my name being posted on the "banned from charging on parents account list" often. My sister Koiner was fond of the magazine selection.....She joined me on the "list" (Robert Kulp)

I loved going to Lipes in the 60's and 70's, hanging out with my friends, charging my lime freeze and cheeseburger to my parents' account, feeling especially cool if we were lucky enough to get one of the two booths next to the grill. I believe that my addiction to candy may have started at the Lipes candy counter, although the candy counter at the firehouse was also to blame. I really loved it when they had to put a sign up saying that my little brother was not allowed to charge, as I believe he had been treating all his friends to sodas and burgers and my parents put a stop to it. Help needed for a Wounded Warrior

We often get asked if Black Dog Salvage is a family business. The answer is YES - while we all may not be related by blood - we are a definitely a family, with many extended family members. We now have an extended family member who is a wounded warrior in need of help.

I just received this email from Mike's (Black Dog co-owner) sister Jeanni, asking if we can help spread the word about her best friend's son, Reese, who recently suffered a traumatic injury while serving in Afghanistan.

Any help you can lend would be very much appreciated!

Please see below for Jeanni's letter:

TSgt Daniel Reese Hines is the oldest son of my best friend Renee Kennedy. Reese has served the last 11 years in the US Air Force, most of that time spent in Afghanistan and Iraq, disarming bombs and IEDs so that women, children and other American soldiers would not be killed going about their daily lives.

On April 9th, 2011 Reese was disarming an IED manually when the unspeakable happened. It blew up and blew him up. God was good. There were incredible medics, and other soldiers there who went to work immediately to save Reese's life. It took more that 30 hrs of surgery over the next two days before he was stable enough to move out of Afghanistan. A week in Germany, then on to Walter Reed Army Hospital.

Reese lost his right eye, most of the vision in his left eye, his right index finger and most of the function of his right hand and wrist. Nearly lost his right arm and hand. Had his left leg badly damaged. His face was mostly blown off and has been reconstructed. He has a long, long road of rehab. ahead of him and we still don't know if he will regain enough of use of his right hand or his vision to be independent or of use to the Air Force.

His mother Renee, who is an experienced trauma nurse, knew what it was going to take to keep Reese alive and moving in the right direction, as far as his recovery was concerned. She left her job and her husband in Alaska to stay at her son's side and help like only a mother can.

In the last 6 months she has lost her job, spent most, if not all, of her savings. In addition to everything, her husband Scott has been fighting tonsil cancer since October of 2010 and has gone it alone for the past 6 months. I can only imagine how scared they all are about the uncertainty of the future.

I tell you all this because I feel strongly that we can help. My family and I know and love this family like they were our own. Renee's boys and my two children were born at the same time, went to daycare together and grew up together. We want very much to take on and support a Wounded Warrior and His or Her Family. Why not one of our own.

Reese is a good man and the father of two young sons. Renee is one of the best people I have ever known. We are asking all of you to reach deep into your hearts, and pockets, and help us help them. I promise to keep everyone updated on where your help is going and Reese's progress as time goes on.

Chocolate Chip Dessert Cheese Ball

Thanks to everyone who came out to our Holiday Open House this Saturday! We had a great time seeing familiar & new faces!

A few folks requested a recipe for the delicious dessert ball that our friend and vendor Marti ('Twice is Nice') brought. Here it is!

Chocolate Chip Dessert Cheese Ball

1 - 8oz package of cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup of butter, softened
1/4 cup of confectioners' sugar
2 Tbs. of brown sugar
1/4 tsp. of vanilla extract
1 cup of mini chocolate chips
1/2-3/4 cup of pecans
1/2 cup of chocolate cookies crushed or mini chocolate chips

In a mixing bowl, beat cream cheese and butter until fluffy. Gradually add sugars and vanilla; beat until just combined. Stir in chocolate chips. Cover and refrigerate 2 hours. Remove from refrigerator and shape into a ball; roll in pecans and chocolate crushed cookies (or mini chocolate chips).

Serve with sugar cookies, butter cookies or graham crackers.

Enjoy!

The Pet Calendar is a major fundraiser for the RVSPCA, providing the funds necessary for food, shelter, medical care and TLC for the thousands of homeless and unwanted animals who call our shelter "home" while they wait for a new family to find them.

There was a great turnout at today's ribbon cutting ceremony for the Vic Thomas Park and bridge to Wasena Park! We are thrilled that folks can now easily hop, skip and jump over to Black Dog Salvage easily from the Roanoke Greenway!

Mayor Bowers and the family of Vic Thomas were on hand to cut the ribbon.

House Tour: A New Old Lake House on Smith Mountain Lake - Design/Build by Blue Ridge Residential

This lakeside retreat was designed and built by Robert Kulp, owner of Blue Ridge Residential (and co-owner of Black Dog Salvage). Robert and his team did a beautiful job creating a home that feels like its been there forever, while including today's modern conveniences.

this 16 ft wide mirror was originally hung in the former Angler's Cafe in downtown Roanoke.

Note the stained glass sidelights in the center and on each end.

This would open up any room in a residence or commercial building!
